Declan Rice sees funny side after Harry Kane snub goes viral during England win
Declan Rice has accepted his role in the latest ‘Hello darkness, my old friend’ meme after he was unintentionally subbed by Harry Kane following the forward’s goal against Albania.
The West Ham midfielder was accidentally left hanging by the England captain after offering a high-five, with Kane making his way back towards his own half.
Although Harry Maguire was on hand to spare further blushes for Rice, he has accepted the unfortunate subbing to the joy of his social media followers.
Alongside a clip of the celebration, he wrote on Twitter on Sunday evening: “I’m waiting for the.. Hello darkness my old friend meme to come.”
Mason Mount, who grabbed the second goal of the match to secure all three points, also shared the clip on Instagram with the caption: “Some say Declan Rice is still waiting…”
Kane has also been quick in responding, adding in a joke about his usual awareness on the pitch. He wrote alongside a laughing face: “Sorry mate should have checked my shoulder.”
On the overall performance, Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate singled out Mason Mount for praise after he put the game to bed in the second half.
He said when asked if Mount could start again against Poland on Wednesday: “Absolutely, we've looked after all the players in the first game.
“As for his load coming into the camp, he didn't play in the midweek in the Champions League.
“But regardless of that, we are trying to win and qualify for a World Cup and I can't be constantly thinking about rotating the squad.
“We've got a lot of players missing and we've tried to protect our forward players through that first part of the week. Now we have just got to try and win the games.”

Adding of his performances at Chelsea: “He is a very good player.
“I was saying this in the autumn, but I suppose now Thomas Tuchel is picking him everyone will agree. When it was Frank Lampard it didn't count for some reason.
“He is an exceptional player, he finds space intelligently, he manipulates the ball very well, he creates chances and he scores goals. I thought his performance was excellent tonight.”
