Dean Henderson expects to become Manchester United’s new No.1 next season amid doubts over David de Gea’s future, according to reports.
Henderson, 23, returned from a successful loan spell at Sheffield United last summer in the hope of usurping De Gea as United’s first-choice goalkeeper.
But this season the academy graduate has only been afforded four Premier League appearances by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who has still preferred De Gea in between the sticks despite his shaky form of late.
That will change over the next few games, however, as the latter is likely to be unavailable for the rest of the month after heading back to Spain for the birth of his first child.
Henderson is therefore set to receive an extended run in the team, yet The Sun claim he wants to replace De Gea on a full-time basis next season.
The one-cap England star believes he is ready to take over in goal at Old Trafford, and reports suggest United are considering selling their current No.1 in the summer transfer window.
De Gea has seen his form plummet in recent seasons, with frequent costly errors tarnishing his status as the best goalkeeper in world football.
And with United looking to cut down on their £600,000-a-week goalkeeper wage bill, it is believed the 31-year-old – who rakes in over half of that figure on a club-high £375,000-a-week – could be offloaded when the transfer window reopens.

His departure would clear the coast for Henderson, who has reportedly been left frustrated with his lack of game time in the 2020/21 campaign, to become the club’s top shot-stopper next season.
The youngster is said to be attracting interest from the likes of Tottenham, Chelsea, West Ham and Borussia Dortmund, too, meaning his eye could begin to wander elsewhere if he isn’t given reassurances over more minutes next year.
Henderson showcased his promise on loan at Sheffield United in the 2019/20 campaign, with his tally of 13 clean sheets the fourth-highest in the Premier League that season.
