Manchester United are among a number of clubs that have been heavily linked with a move for Erling Haaland this summer. The 20-year-old is one of the most prolific goalscorers in world football, having netted 33 goals in 31 appearances in all competitions for Borussia Dortmund this season.

As a result, the likes of United, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester City and Chelsea have all been heavily linked with Haaland.

However, United’s newly appointed technical director has previously spoken about current stars Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood in glowing terms, claiming the pair have the potential to be “elite” and “world-class”.

Should United go out and sign Haaland, the duo would find their opportunities to play through the middle much more limited.

Speaking last year, Fletcher claimed that Martial could go on to become “a real elite No.9 goalscorer”.

Speaking on MUTV Group Chat, he said: “The talent has always been there.

“There’s always been questions marks about his work-rate and his desire but he’s definitely putting that right and he’s been the most surprising player for me [since the restart].

“I think he’s been fantastic. I think we’re seeing somebody on the cusp – if he keeps this going – of being a real elite No.9 goalscorer.”

Speaking late last year, he said:  “I think he’s a starter in United’s best team. Mason plays off the right-hand side, Anthony Martial in the middle and Marcus Rashford on the left, with Bruno [Fernandes] at No.10.

“That’s the best attack and the one that put people on the edge of their seats after lockdown and produced United’s best form.

“I’m sure Mason’s evolution is to be a No.9. He’s got world-class potential. The fact he can go both ways – not many strikers can go naturally onto their left foot and naturally onto their right foot and finish it.

“He’s a defender’s nightmare.”

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was recently asked about the prospect of Haaland joining the club and he replied: “Erling will have a fantastic career. I’m following Erling. I’ve always said that.

“Was it 18 months we had together [at Molde] or something? Almost two years, maybe. A wonderful time. He will definitely have a great career for both Norway and his club.

“He is doing incredibly well for Dortmund, so we’ll see where he ends up. As a Norwegian and someone who has worked with him, it is of course fun that he does so well.

“We will do what we can to become a better team, then he will do what he can to become a better player. Where does he end up? I do not want to say anything other than that, that I wish him all the best. Which choice he makes may be up to him.”
