Danny Murphy tells Erik ten Hag to stop whinging and whining
‘It sounds like he’s just whinging and whining’: Danny Murphy tells Erik ten Hag to stop complaining about the treatment of his Man Utd players after Andy Carroll’s horror tackle on Christian Eriksen sidelined the Dane until April
- The Dutchman was not happy with Andy Carroll’s challenge on Christian Eriksen
- Eriksen is now sidelined until April with an ankle injury sustained in the tackle
- Murphy believes players are more protected than ever in the modern game
Danny Murphy has hit out at Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag and accused him of whinging and whining about the treatment of his players.
The Dutchman was furious with Andy Carroll’s late challenge on Christian Eriksen in United’s FA Cup win over Reading, which resulted in a long-term injury to the midfielder.
Carroll’s horror tackle has put Eriksen out of action for at least three months with an ankle injury and Ten Hag condemned the actions of the striker after the game.
But speaking on talkSPORT, Murphy seemed to take exception to Ten Hag’s gripes and suggested he should focus more on the positives at Old Trafford.
‘It sounds like he’s just whinging, whining.’ Murphy said.

‘You’re in the Premier League! We are in a world now where creative attacking players are protected more than ever, more than ever!
‘Very rarely do we see bad injuries from bad tackles, very rare, not many, and I think we’re in a good place because of that. I’m not saying we should go back to the old days where players can knock seven bells out of each other.
‘I just don’t see why you would come out and whinged about it when it’s just a consequence of playing football.
‘He’s working at Manchester United, be positive!’
Former England striker Carroll wasn’t even booked for the challenge on Eriksen but did later receive two further bookings that led to a red card for the 34-year-old.
After the match Ten Hag made a point of his disappointment at Carroll not getting punished for the tackle and said: ‘I think football has to set limits, restrictions, that you protect the players.
‘I think what football wants is the best players being available on the pitch.
‘This tackle and the two tackles after… they don’t belong on the football pitch because it’s a high risk to injure your colleague, so I think it’s worse. So, I am wondering about that.’

The Dutch boss also referenced challenges on Lisandro Martinez in United’s 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace.
However, ex-Liverpool man Murphy says he would have had the same reaction if Jurgen Klopp had the some complaints – or any other manager.
‘It’s not just because it’s Ten Hag, I would say the same about Jurgen Klopp,’ Murphy added.
‘I’ve sat here and talked about Klopp whining and I’ve said exactly the same. It’s not a Man United thing.
‘Ten Hag has surpassed all expectations. He’s done a brilliant job, he’s got so much right, but whinging? I don’t like it. There’s no conspiracy here.’
