Danny Murphy makes Liverpool top four prediction amid current slump

Danny Murphy has declared Liverpool will almost certainly miss out on next season's Champions League due to their "horrendous" recent form.

A 2-0 defeat by Everton on Saturday leaves Liverpool sixth in the Premier League table, five points behind West Ham in fourth.

It also marked the Reds' fourth consecutive defeat in the top flight, while in contrast they lost just three games during the entire 2019/20 campaign.

Liverpool's misery was compounded by an injury to Jordan Henderson, who serves as club captain and is without doubt one of their most important players.

Given the current bleak circumstances at Anfield, former Reds midfielder Murphy cannot see how his old side can finish in the top four.

"Confidence is low," Murphy told talkSPORT . "I think the strength and depth question mark is now there compared to someone like (Manchester) City, even probably the likes of Chelsea and (Manchester) United in terms of squad depth.

"They've not had these problems in the previous years – in their successful period – so it's something the hierarchy will maybe have to look at.

"The recruitment; do they need more quality?

"It's been a horrendous time for them but – and I say 'but' in a positive sense – they've got time now to get this back.

"You would suggest their recent form doesn't indicate that they're going to do that, especially after losing Henderson. That was a major blow for them, a real blow.

"Right now, I don't think they're going to make it, from what I'm seeing. But there's part of me that thinks there's a small chance with the quality they've got they could turn it round.

"But their form recently does not suggest they're going to go on a winning streak of four of five games."
