Daft footballer picks up greatest red ever after petty time wasting and dive

Lee Tomlin saw red after receiving two yellow cards across just 17 seconds during the first-half of his Doncaster debut following series of events that left supporters baffled.

With just seconds remaining of a goalless opening period, Tomlin thought it would be a good idea to block a Bradford free-kick from being taken before pushing the ball away and then diving after minimal content from a rival.

Veteran 33-year-old Tomlin, who has played for the likes of Middlesbrough, Bristol City and Cardiff across an extended career, was initially booked by Bobby Madden after five minutes of stoppage time for refusing to get out of the way of a set-piece.

Having also flicked the ball away amid the confusion, Tomlin theatrically dived to the ground after Bradford's Jamie Walker had stepped on his toe while trying to speak to the ref.

The pantomime League Two scenes ended up in Tomlin being dismissed while he was still sat on the playing surface – and for some reason throwing up his arms in complaint.

With former Soccer AM presenter Max Rushden sharing the clip on Twitter, one fan wrote in response on Twitter: "The most stupid red card you’ll ever see, courtesy of Lee Tomlin."

With a second saying: "This has to be the greatest red card in history.." Another said: "Possibly the worst red card I have ever seen."

With a fourth writing: "End the season now, nothing's going to top this." And a fifth concluding: "10 game ban purely for the cringe factor."

Tomlin's blushes were spared as far as the result was concerned with his colleagues hanging on to the 0-0 scoreline before Bradford's Kian Harratt received a red of his own just before full-time.

Tomlin had been making his debut under Gary McSheffrey after leaving Walsall at the end of last season.
