Croatia celebrations branded ’embarrassing’ after pipping Morocco to third place

Croatia’s post-match celebrations after beating Morocco in the third place play-off for the World Cup have been branded “embarrassing.”

Zlatko Dalic’s side beat the North Africans 2-1 to secure the bronze medal in Qatar. Their performance follows their impressive showing in the 2018 World Cup when they surged all the way to the final, before losing to France in the final.

With many predicting the third place encounter between two heartbroken teams to be a dour affair, the contest was fought with intensity, passion, and most importantly skill. Nevertheless, despite the fact Croatia evidently had to fight very hard for the victory, they have still been labelled embarrassing by many on social media.

"Croatia celebrating 3rd place like that ? Embarrassing," one fan wrote on social media. "Embarrassing from Croatia celebrating third place," another added.

Another supporter more brusquely tweeted, "Croatia celebrating 3rd place is f***ing embarrassing." A different football fan even decided to throw Morocco into the line of fire when he commented, "Croatia celebrating winning a pointless game and it’s less embarrassing than how Morocco are handling losing a pointless game."

Chelsea and Real Madrid transfer target Josko Gvardiol got the Eastern Europeans off to the perfect start with a wonderful diving header after only seven minutes. However, Morocco instantly hit back through Achraf Dari who guided a header past Dominik Livakovic from close range.

Walid Gregagui’s side looked very dangerous on the counterattack but were not able to really trouble the Dinamo Zagreb goalkeeper. Unfortunately, their lack of cutting edge was made to pay, as Mislav Orsic whipped a wonderful curling effort off the inside of the post and into the back of the net.

Croatia were able to sit back and hold onto their lead while a frustrated Morocco side desperately tried to claw their way back into the contest. Later in the second half, Walid Gregagui’s side suffered their fourth injury in the central defence department as Jawad El Yamiq was forced off with an injury.

Nevertheless, Morocco depart this year’s tournament with their reputations firmly enhanced, wonderful memories of defeating Belgium, Spain, and Portugal, and with the title of the first ever African country to reach the last four.
