Cristiano Ronaldo and Jose Mourinho’s past comments on each other should pour cold water over recent reports linking the Manchester United forward to an AS Roma switch. The pair came to blows on numerous instances at Real Madrid, and there was no love lost when they reunited years later.
According to The Sun, Ronaldo had hoped to retire at United after signing a two-year contract last summer.
But the Red Devils’ dismal campaign has left his future in lingo, with agent Jorge Mendes holding crunch talks with new CEO Richard Arnold about recent form.
And with Ralf Rangnick’s side facing a battle to qualify for next season’s Champions League, a failure to do so could see Ronaldo force an early exit.
Amid uncertainty over his future, Bayern Munich, PSG and Mourinho’s PSG have been touted as suitors.

But United fans worrying about his potential departure can rest on the likelihood that he won’t be linking up with Mourinho again.
Previously, Ronaldo and Mourinho had a somewhat dysfunctional relationship during the coach’s three-year spell at Real from 2010 to 2013.
And Angel di Maria recently recalled one occasion when he ripped into Ronaldo for his work rate whilst playing for Los Blancos.
“Mourinho is insane. With me, he was always a good guy,” Di Maria told Libero.
“He fought with anyone, though; he didn’t give a f***. One time he fought with Ronaldo telling him he didn’t run, that everyone ran for him.”
In 2018, Ronaldo aimed deep-cutting words at Mourinho after United beat Juventus 2-1 in Turin in the Champions League Group Stage.
Mourinho celebrated the late comeback by cupping his ear to jeers from the home fans, much to the displeasure of several Juve players, including the 37-year-old.
An unnamed United source told ESPN: “We had just beaten Juventus with two late goals, and Jose Mourinho, the manager at the time, went onto the pitch and started to goad the Juventus fans by cupping his ear to the noise.
“A lot of the players were p***** off with him because it seemed like he was making the win about him rather than the team.
“And Cristiano was furious with him, too. He walked past and said, ‘(Mourinho) doesn’t have the class to manage Manchester United’.”
It wouldn’t be unorthodox to suggest Ronaldo would rather join Bayern or PSG over Roma anyway, regardless of Mourinho’s presence.
But despite their Portuguese allegiance, there is plenty of bad blood between the pair that would only intensify again if they worked together in the Italian capital.
