Cristiano Ronaldo told to ‘retire like Gerard Pique’ to respect his legacy

Cristiano Ronaldo has been told to follow in the footsteps of Gerard Pique and retire following Manchester United's miserable defeat against Aston Villa.

The 37-year-old, who celebrated the most recent of his five Ballon d'Or triumphs back in 2017, was given the captains' armband by Erik ten Hag but was again off the pace.

Ronaldo failed to score with his three shots at goal and was also booked as United slipped to a 3-1 defeat. The forward has now scored only three goals across 16 appearances this season.

After the defeat, a Twitter user said: "Ronaldo should respect his legacy and retire like Pique." A second posted: "Ronaldo should just do what pique did yesterday and retire…"

Another agreed: "RONALDO SHOULD DO A PIQUE AND RETIRE IMMEDIATELY IF HE LOVES UNITED."

And a fourth concluded: "Cristiano Ronaldo is truly finished. He should follow Pique and retire."

Fans referenced Pique's decision to retire midway through his contract at Barcelona – which led to a hugely positive reception following their win over Almeria.

Ronaldo being named as captain was surprising to some considering Ten Hag's stance over his place in the starting XI – and because he was dropped for an attitude issue back in October.

Things got worse for Ronaldo at Villa Park as home fans laughed at his frustration in a figure where he was booked for clashing with Tyrone Mings.

Ten Hag told Match of the Day of the result in general: "We lost the game at the start of first half and second half and that is not acceptable. They looked more fresh and more ready.

"We need to be more sharp. The result is really clear. It never lies. Today we were not good enough.

"We didn't get the right organisation. We created chances and good chances at 2-1. But you are really disappointed to concede at the start of the second half."
