Cristiano Ronaldo receives surprise message from Harry Maguire after 200th cap
Cristiano Ronaldo part of new Portugal coach Roberto Martinez’s plans
Cristiano Ronaldo received a surprise message from former Manchester United team-mate Harry Maguire after becoming the first man to feature in 200 international matches on Tuesday night. The 38-year-old spent more than 14 months playing alongside Maguire but left the Red Devils last November and ended up joining Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr.
Ronaldo will be remembered as one of the greatest football players to ever walk the earth. And he lined-up for Portugal in Reykjavik as his country took on Iceland in a Euro 2024 qualifying match.
The veteran was awarded a Guinness World Record accolade ahead of kick-off to mark his incredible achievement. And in true Ronaldo fashion, he proved to be the matchwinner once again as he popped up with the only goal of the game in the 90th minute to keep his country at the top of the Group J table.
After the match, Ronaldo took to Instagram to post a video that highlighted some of his best moments in a Portugal shirt. And he accompanied it with the caption: “200 games with the same commitment, dedication, and responsibility, just like the first time I played with this jersey. I am here, continuing to score, pursuing my dream and giving my all for the team and for our country. Por amor a Portugal.”

Ronaldo’s video had been liked by over 4.5million people by Wednesday morning. And Maguire was quick to pay tribute to the ace as he commented: “Some achievement.” And the defender also added emojis of clapping hands and a flame.
At the start of last year, Ronaldo’s relationship with Maguire took a turn for the worse amid a power struggle between the two players. But any ill feeling now appears to be a thing of the past as Maguire was clearly more than happy to praise the striker.

Ronaldo was hauled in front of the cameras to give his thoughts on his record cap in the aftermath of Tuesday’s encounter. And the blockbuster star said: “So happy. It’s the kind of moment that you never expect, to reach 200 caps. For me it’s an unbelievable achievement.
“To be in the Gunners World Records is amazing. Of course, scoring the winning goal makes it even more special, so I have to say thank you to the stadium, to Iceland, the people, the fans, the stadium for having this kind of party for me. Also to the Portugal national team, the federation. I’m so happy. It’s a special day. I have to say thank you to all of them. They made my day. They made my night, let’s say it that way. It’s not night, they made my day, let’s say it that way.”
