Cristiano Ronaldo ‘earning more’ than total spent on Man Utd summer transfers

Mason Mount slammed by former Man Utd star after poor start – 'Nowhere to be seen'

Cristiano Ronaldo will earn more this year while playing for Al-Nassr than Manchester United were able to afford on summer transfers. Ronaldo quit Old Trafford under acrimonious circumstances nearly a year ago, eventually deciding to move to Saudi Arabia.

The iconic forward initially preferred to stay in Europe but no offers were forthcoming. Even Real Madrid, whose training ground Ronaldo used to keep fit at after his United contract was torn up, passed up on a high-profile deal.

Ronaldo arrived at Al-Nassr last December and after a slow start, things have gone well for the 38-year-old. The goals have flowed and he was the flagbearer for an influx of stars joining the Pro League in the months after his own move.

A lucrative contract lured Ronaldo to Saudi Arabia after Portugal’s exit from last year’s World Cup. It is widely claimed that the United and Real Madrid icon is paid handsomely to continue performing for Al-Nassr.

According to Forbes, Ronaldo is the best-paid footballer in the world. A reported £214million salary puts him way ahead of the likes of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland.

Ronaldo’s wages also mean he will earn more in his first 12 months at Al-Nassr than his former club Man Utd were able to spend on transfers this summer. The Red Devils oversaw a mini overhaul of Erik ten Hag’s squad to help the Dutchman challenge for the Premier League title.

United put forward an outlay of around £178m on seven new signings. Striker Rasmus Hojlund was the most expensive at around £64m. Mason Mount arrived from Premier League rivals Chelsea for £55m.

There was also the £43m arrival of goalkeeper Andre Onana. Second-choice shot-stopper Altay Bayindir was lured from Fenerbahce for a much smaller fee.

Ten Hag also acquired Sergio Reguilon and Sofyan Amrabat on loan from Tottenham and Fiorentina, respectively. Both players provide depth in midfield and attack, while Jonny Evans returned to Old Trafford on a free transfer.

Unfortunately for Ten Hag, the new arrivals have not quite had the desired effect at United. A woeful start to the season sees the Red Devils sitting ninth in the Premier League, only saved by last weekend’s dramatic late win over Brentford.

Successive defeats in the Champions League, against Bayern Munich and Galatasaray, mean United have a mountain to climb if they are to qualify for the knockout rounds. Ten Hag will expect far more from his new signings given the huge amount of money spent.
