Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo has been charged by the FA for the phone-slapping incident involving an Everton fan earlier this year.

Ronaldo appeared to hit the phone out of the 14-year-old supporter's hand following United's 1-0 loss at Goodison Park in April in a video which was shared to social media. He later apologised and was cautioned by police last month.

The FA have subsequently charged him with a breach of Rule E3. "It is alleged that the forward's conduct after the final whistle was improper and/or violent," they wrote in a statement.

United have said they will support Ronaldo in his response to the charge. He was last night said to be 'surprised' the FA had waited so long and is not expected to challenge it.

A club spokesman said: "We note the FA announcement in relation to Cristiano Ronaldo. We will be supporting the player in his response to the charge."

Ronaldo was said to have left Toffees fans Jake Harding with a smashed phone and bruised hand as a result of the incident and was interviewed by police under caution in relation to the alleged assault and criminal damage.

He issued an apology on Instagram following the match, writing: "It’s never easy to deal with emotions in difficult moments such as the one we are facing.

"Nevertheless, we always have to be respectful, patient and set the example for all the youngsters who love the beautiful game.

"I would like to apologise for my outburst and, if possible, I would like to invite this supporter to watch a game at Old Trafford as a sign of fair-play and sportsmanship."

Jake and his mum turned down the offer and instead visited Everton's training ground.
