Antonio Conte's first game in the Tottenham Hotspur dugout was marred by a spree of three red cards late in the second half.
Spurs sailed into a three-goal lead as Son Heung-min and Lucas Moura fired the Lilywhites ahead before Jacob Rasmussen put the ball into his own net.
However, their Dutch visitors, Vitesse Arnhem, quickly pulled two back before half-time.
Rasmussen cancelled out his own goal before Matus Bero was able to cut the deficit even further when he curled the ball past a hapless Hugo Lloris.
But the games talking point was still to come as the two sides returned for the second half.
Spurs were the first to go down to ten men when Cristian Romero received his second yellow of the match just before the hour mark.
Romero was making his second appearance in this seasons Europa Conference League.
But when he hauled down Lois Openda on the halfway line, he gave the referee no choice but to flash the centre-back the red card.
The sending off gave Vitesse a slither of hope – with Spurs now down to ten men – and the Dutch side began to throw the kitchen sink at the game.

But 20 minutes later, the Dutch side were on the receiving end of a red card themselves.
Highly-rated defender Danilho Doekhi, who has been linked with Newcastle in the past, hauled down Harry Kane for his second yellow.
And things went from bad to worse for the Dutch side when Markus Schubert handled the ball outside his box after Emerson attempted to lob the keeper.
Schubert was immediately shown the red card, leaving Vitesse with their second choice keeper and nine men on the pitch.
