Commentator yelled ‘you beauty’ as Villa beat Bergkamp’s Inter Milan on pens

Commentator Alan Parry yelled "you beauty" as Aston Villa beat Dennis Bergkamp's Inter Milan on penalties on this day 28 years ago.

The two sides met at Villa Park for the second leg in their UEFA Cup first round tie back in late September 1994 after Inter had won 1-0 in Italy two weeks earlier. Ray Houghton's first half goal was enough to secure a 1-1 aggregate scoreline and send the match to extra time before penalties were required to separate the sides.

Garry Parker, Steve Staunton, Andy Townsend and Phil King converted their penalties to send Villa through, with Parry unable to contain his joy at their victory.

As King's penalty hit the back of the net, the commentator let out a joyous cry of "you beauty!" before the defender was mobbed by his team-mates.

Parry continued: “Fantastic scenes at Villa Park. Phil King is the hero. Justice has been done. This penalty kick puts Aston Villa into the next round. It puts Ron Atkinson into champagne time. Villa deserve their triumph.”

Arsenal legend Bergkamp featured for the Italian giants and scored during the shootout, meanwhile, Paul McGrath, Ugo Ehiogu and Dean Saunders all appeared for the hosts.

The two-legged tie represents the last two of the clubs' four competitive meetings, having met each other in the second round of the same competition four years earlier.

On that occasion, Villa surrendered a two-goal first leg lead at the San Siro to crash out 3-2 on aggregate. There would be more heartbreak in the next round after beating Inter in 1994, with Ron Atkinson's side losing on away goals to Trabzonspor.

Villa have a storied history of success in continental competition, having won the European Cup in 1982, beating Bayern Munich in the final. They followed that win up by triumphing over Barcelona in the UEFA Super Cup the following January.

However, it has now been over a decade since Villa played in Europe, with their last appearance coming in the Europa League back in 2010. Their campaign ended at the first hurdle as they were beaten 4-3 on aggregate by Rapid Vienna in the play-off round.
