Steve Clarke has warned Scotland’s players to stay at home with their families during their pre-Euros break amid fears of his squad being exposed to Covid-19.

The players will reconvene at their Rockliffe Hall base in Darlington on Tuesday evening ahead of Monday’s Group D opener against the Czech Republic at Hampden Park.

Clarke has given his group three days off this week after the conclusion of their Spanish training camp. But the fact that John Fleck remains in a hotel room in Alicante after contracting Covid is reason enough for Clarke to remind his players of the dangers of the virus.

That case led to six players missing last week’s 2-2 draw with Holland as a precaution, and it appears the team avoided a wider outbreak.

Clarke, though, has told them not to take any chances, especially as Fleck arrived in camp having picked up the virus in the days beforehand.

‘It’s safe for them to go home and spend time with their families,’ he said. ‘We don’t expect to see any of them out and about.

‘What happened last week was a reminder that Covid is there. It’s not going away this year, and we have to learn to live with it.’

On his decision to give his players a rest period, Clarke added: ‘It’s important to let them go home and relax for a few days. It’s a break they need because it has been an intense period.

‘With the Covid situation, it’s better to let them go to their families rather than try to get the families to the team hotel.’
