Former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O'Hara says Manchester City must accept Benjamin Mendy hasn't worked out for Pep Guardiola's side.

City lost their opening Premier League clash for the first time in over a decade when Son Heung-min curled the ball into the far post past a helpless Ederson.

But Mendy came under fire for his involvement in the game's only goal.

O'Hara tweeted: "Man City need to just accept that the signing of Mendy hasn’t worked out, injury after injury and he’s just not the same player anymore, Zinchenko has to play there."

And O'Hara wasn't the only critic of Mendy's performance.

One City fan tweeted: "I can't deal with another season of Mendy. I'm sorry. He's so dodgy it's painful."

"Mendy is one of the worst LB’s in the world but he’s somehow managed to win pretty much everything that there is to win."

Another added: "When are people going to realise that Benjamin Mendy is not good enough?"

"Look at Mendy. Just look at him. I can’t believe what I’m watching," a fourth tweeted.

Mendy arrived at the Etihad during the summer of 2017.

He had been part of a highly-fancied Monaco side, that also featured Kylian Mbappe and Bernardo Silva, which had claimed the Ligue 1 title and knocked City out of the Champions League.

And Guardiola was impressed enough to pay the French side £51million for his services.

However, after barely a month in Manchester, he ruptured his cruciate ligament and has suffered injuries as a result ever since.

In Mendy's four years at the club, he has missed a staggering 124 matches in all competitions for the Citizens, according to Transfermarkt.

The Frenchman has long since lost his spot in the starting side to Oleksandr Zinchenko, and City fans were dumbfounded as to why the Ukrainian didn't get the nod.
