Inter Milan have confirmed that midfielder Christian Eriksen has left the club following the mutual termination of his contract. The tough decision was made on the basis of Serie A rules that prohibit players participating in matches with a pacemaker, something Eriksen had fitted in the aftermath of the cardiac arrest he suffered at Euro 2020 while representing Denmark.
Back in June, the former Tottenham playmaker collapsed during his nation’s group opener against Finland in Copenhagen before medical staff rushed to his attention.
Eriksen’s life was saved thanks to CPR and the use of a defibrillator but the 29-year-old has not played since as a precaution following specialist medical advice from doctors.
Following consultation, Eriksen had an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) fitted to prevent potentially fatal cardiac arrests in the future.
The device is designed to send a shock that restores regular heart rhythm.
However, back in August the Italian Football Federation’s technical science committee confirmed that Eriksen would not be able to play in Serie unless the device was removed.
Now Inter have confirmed the departure of the player, who has not yet lost hope he can continue his playing career.
Their statement read: “FC Internazionale Milano announces that an agreement has been reached for the consensual termination of Christian Eriksen’s contract. The Club and the entire Nerazzurri family embrace the player and wish him the best for his future.
“Even if today the paths of Inter and Christian separate, a strong and indissoluble bond will remain. The best moments, the goals and the victories, the embrace of the fans outside the San Siro in celebrating the Scudetto: everything will always remain fixed in the history of the Nerazzurri.”
Eriksen helped Inter win the Scudetto in his first full season at the club under new Tottenham boss Antonio Conte following his move from Spurs in January 2020.
The Danish international has been doing some light individual training sessions in the past few months back in Scandinavia with former club Odense.
“Eriksen reached out to us, and he is now training by himself,” a club spokesman confirmed.
“It’s natural for him since he played here in his youth and lives around the corner. We are very happy to be able to provide training facilities for him.”
