Choupo-Moting blocks team-mate’s shot as fans joke ‘the Stoke is strong in him’

Football fans were quick to mock Eric Choupo-Moting after the Bayern Munich star seemingly went out of his way to halt his side's Champions League progress.

Lining up for the second leg of Bayern's round-of-16 clash against PSG, the former Stoke City striker, 33, blocked a goal-bound shot from Joshua Kimmich before interfering with play in an offside position as Thomas Muller brilliantly turned home Jamal Musiala's inviting cross.

The two passages of play were cruelly mocked by fans on social media but Choupo-Moting soon had the last laugh by sending Bayern through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

"Choupo-Moting blocking his teammates again must be the Stoke in him," blasted one fan. "Choupo-Moting is absolutely dreadful. Stealing a living. There’s a reason he couldn’t get a game at Stoke. S****," slammed a second.

"Choupo-Moting goal disallowed, the Stoke is strong in him," harked a third. "Choupo-Moting far, far too slow there. Then blocks Kimmich’s shot," condemned a fourth.

However, the Cameroon international soon turned the tide on Twitter. Having single-handedly helped PSG stay in the contest, Choupo-Moting delivered the hammer blow of a second goal, slipping the ball past Gianluigi Donnarumma after Bayern picked the Parisian's pockets on the edge of their own area.

"Choupo-Moting scoring the goal that knocks Mbappe, Messi and co. out of the Champions League is so funny. The man played for STOKE," praised on fan on social media. "Choupo-Moting went from cold nights at Stoke to knocking some of the best players in the world out, lauded another.

"There’s no way the same Choupo-Moting that was relegated with stoke is about to knock out Messi and Mbappe," hailed a third. "Choupo-Moting top 10 ballon d’or candidate," commented a fourth.

Serge Gnabry's breakaway goal completed a 3-0 aggregate win for Bayern with the Bundesliga champions set to learn their quarter-final opponents next Friday. The draw takes place at 11am GMT, where remaining teams will learn their potential pathway to the final in Istanbul.
