Chelsea boss Graham Potter may have one eye on the January transfer window in a bid to provide a boost to their Champions League hopes. Todd Boehly spent big in the last summer on the likes of Kalidou Koulibaly, Marc Cucurella and Raheem Sterling.
That was while Thomas Tuchel was still in charge before the Chelsea owner surprisingly sacked the German and Potter was brought in as his replacement. The January window will be Potter’s first chance to oversee the transfer market in charge of Chelsea.
They’re already been active off the pitch in recent weeks with deals for Christopher Nkunku, Andrey Santos and David Datro Fofana all wrapped up. But Nkunku isn’t set to join until the summer while Santos and Fofana are expected to be immediately loaned back out to gain some more experience.
Potter will likely want some reinforcements in through the door now in the shape of players who can make a difference straight away. They’ve been linked with a number of players heading into January and Express Sport takes a look at the three signings that would make it a dream window for Potter.
Benoit Badiashile
A left-sided centre-back appears to be the top target for Chelsea heading into the January transfer window. Josko Gvardiol was the club’s top target last summer and they have maintained an interest ever since, particularly after his impressive displays at the 2022 World Cup.
But it looks as though Chelsea aren’t willing to pay the huge price to sign Gvardiol and RB Leipzig are unlikely to sell midway through the season. Benoit Badiashile has now emerged as the top option and talks are already underway to secure his signing for around £30million.
The 21-year-old is the latest young French centre-back to attract attention from the top European clubs following his displays for Monaco. And he fits the mold of the kind of player Chelsea are looking to sign in the transfer market with plenty of room to grow into a world-class player.
Martin Zubimendi
Bolstering options in central midfield is also seen as a priority given N’Golo Kante’s continued fitness issues. Jorginho has been the only mainstay in midfield under Potter with the Chelsea boss chopping and changing between Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Mateo Kovacic.
Conor Gallagher has also been used sparingly, but Chelsea are in need of freshening things up in midfield and Martin Zubimendi has emerged as a potential option. The Blues have reportedly already made their first move to try and sign the midfielder, who has a £56million release clause in his contract at Real Sociedad.
Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice have also been touted as targets for Chelsea, but Zubimendi may be more attainable next month.
Youssoufa Moukoko
Chelsea will also likely be in the market for another striker following Armando Broja’s injury against Aston Villa. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Kai Havertz have struggled to impress and Chelsea want to inject some youth into their attacking line-up.
The Blues are said to be leading the race to sign the highly-rated Youssoufa Moukoko from Borussia Dortmund, who has just six months remaining on his contract. The 18-year-old has already caught the eye in the Bundesliga, scoring six goals and providing four assists in just eight league starts.
