Chelsea fans have reacted with delight to how a young Armando Broja responded to transfer interest from Tottenham. The striker was picked up by Spurs as a schoolboy but always wanted to play for the Blues instead, and it didn’t take their scouts long to notice his talent.

Broja burst onto the scene last season during a loan spell at Southampton, scoring six Premier League goals. Chelsea consider him to be one of their bright hopes for the future and batted away serious interest from the likes of West Ham and Everton this summer.

The 21-year-old’s career path could have been completely different if things had progressed another way. In a recent interview with Players Tribune Football, Broja detailed the moment he first heard of Tottenham’s interest after impressing in youth football.

“I was at Burnham Juniors, the club I was first at and I remember going to a tournament,” he said. “The Tottenham scout actually came to watch another boy. I happened to play well that tournament, I got top goalscorer and best player.

“They approached my mum and dad before I even knew about it so when I came back, my mum and dad said; ‘Tottenham came over to us’. I was just thinking, ‘Who’s Tottenham?’. Because I was quite young, I only knew my Sunday league team [and Chelsea].”

The youngster ended up signing with Spurs, spending two years with their academy before dazzling in a youth match against Chelsea and making his long-awaited switch to west London. He then spent 11 years rising through the ranks before making his debut in 2020.

Broja has had to be patient this season with Kai Havertz and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang also battling it out for the starting spot up top. His loyalty to the Blues was rewarded with a bumper six-year contract earlier this month and he could yet be given plenty of chances to impress under new manager Graham Potter.

The ex-Brighton boss has only overseen one competitive match so far – a 1-1 draw with RB Salzburg – and Broja was brought on with around half an hour remaining. It remains to be seen whether Potter is planning to put him in from the start for the challenging trip to Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon.

The youngster played once over the international break, drawing a blank against Israel while Havertz scored twice in a thrilling 3-3 draw with England at Wembley. Aubameyang, meanwhile, had two weeks to regain sharpness having already retired from international duty.

“My dad says to me all the time, ‘you’re not going to stop playing football until you get Albania to the World Cup’. I want to be one of the best football players in the world,” added Broja.

“Every player wants to be one of the best football players in the world but, like I said, I set my targets high and I want to achieve them. I want people to remember me as one of the best football players.”
