Chelsea ‘targeting trio in same position’ including Bayern ace Alphonso Davies
Chelsea are reportedly looking at three players at left-back in January after being left short of quality in the position this season. Ben Chilwell remains their first-choice option but is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury and is not expected to return until at least December.
Marc Cucurella has featured regularly at left-back in Chilwell’s absence, with the Spaniard enjoying a new lease of life at Stamford Bridge after being linked with a move elsewhere over the summer. It leaves Ian Maatsen as the only recognised back-up in Chelsea’s squad, while Levi Colwill has also stepped in to fill the role when needed.
It seems as though further reinforcements will be targeted in the January window, with Chelsea thought to be keen on signing three new left-backs at the turn of the year. Alphonso Davies is said to be among their top targets, according to Simon Phillips Talks Chelsea, but the Blues could face stiff competition from Real Madrid in the race to secure his signature.
The Spanish giants have also been credited with a desire to land Davies, who remains tied down to Bayern Munich until the summer of 2025 but has recently been tipped to move elsewhere. The report adds that Boca Juniors left-back Valentin Barco is another name on Chelsea’s shortlist after turning plenty of heads with his performances in Argentina.

Barco, who has previously been linked with Manchester City, is said to have a release clause of just £8million which could make him a shrewd signing for Chelsea in January. Boca Juniors are reportedly eager to tie him down to a contract extension in order to remove the clause but a new agreement is not forthcoming as things stand.
Wolves defender Rayan Ait-Nouri is also thought to be a target for Chelsea in light of his recent resurgence at Molineux under Gary O’Neil. The 22-year-old is currently being tracked by the west Londoners in their bid to strengthen at left-back next year, according to 90min.

It remains to be seen whether Chelsea will be able to sign all three players in January, with the Blues having been the Premier League’s busiest club in terms of recruitment over the last few seasons. Mauricio Pochettino has already suggested that he will be looking to make further improvements to his squad as Chelsea aim to put their dreadful start to the campaign firmly behind them.
“Football is really dynamic, maybe we are thinking in a different way to two weeks ago or three weeks ago,” said Pochettino when quizzed on potential transfers last month. “[We are] ready and working with the sporting directors and owners to try to be ready. The moment the transfer window is open, we can see if the team needs.”
