Chelsea set to pull off Fabregas repeat to leave Tottenham devastated

Chelsea appointing Mauricio Pochettino as their next head coach strikes several similarities to when they signed Cesc Fabregas nine years ago. This time it will be Tottenham fans left devastated by seeing their former boss head to their London rivals.

Chelsea are closing in on Pochettino and could announce his appointment within the next week. The Argentine may not take over until the summer as interim boss Frank Lampard attempts to steady the ship for the remaining matches of the season.

If Pochettino is confirmed, there would be comparisons to the deal that saw Fabregas head to Stamford Bridge. Clearly the Argentine won’t be pulling his boots on and making an impact on the pitch.

But Chelsea can lure a top manager and upset rival supporters in the process. Like Pochettino, Fabregas was known for his time in north London, albeit on the red half.

Tottenham: Pochettino declares love for Kane in 2017

He broke through as a teenager at Arsenal under Arsene Wenger and became the second-youngest captain in the club’s history. He left to join his boyhood club Barcelona in 2011 but only lasted three years at the Nou Camp.

The Premier League was his ideal destination and Arsenal had first refusal to sign him. He wanted to return to the Emirates and has made that clear on several occasions since.

Arsenal fans were desperate to see Fabregas return. At 27, he was at the peak of his powers.

But Arsene Wenger decided against bringing Fabregas back. He said there was no room for him in his squad but most Gunners fans would have found a space somewhere.

Fabregas had no choice but to look elsewhere and it was another London side in Chelsea who came in for him. It felt like a dagger to the heart of Arsenal fans who viewed the midfielder as ‘one of their own’ after joining the club at such a young age.

The same could now happen with Pochettino and Tottenham. Spurs fans have made it clear they want Poch back. They have sung his name at every game recently and brought banners pleading with Daniel Levy to re-appoint him.

Pochettino is widely reported to have wanted to go back. He would probably join Spurs over almost any other team on the planet.

But this time it’s Levy who has stood firm and told him that won’t be happening. Chelsea, as they did with Fabregas in 2014, are set to swoop in and break rival supporters’ hearts.
