Chelsea saw ‘£72.5m bid immediately rejected’ as Tuchel reunion was denied

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel was denied a reunion with PSG star Marquinhos with the Ligue 1 leaders rejecting a £72.5m bid for the Brazilian during the summer transfer window.

The PSG captain is seen as a vital component of the Parisian's star-studded squad despite the arrival of four-time Champions League winner Sergio Ramos.

A move for Marquinhos would have also seen him reunite with international teammate Thiago Silva.

The Brazilian duo enjoyed seven years together at the Parc Des Princes from 2013-2020 with Marquinhos taking over as captain when Silva headed for Stamford Bridge.

Now French outlet L'Equpie are reporting Tuchel was eyeing another defensive recruit which might have prevented the Blues recent slump.

It states the German gaffer was keen to build on his Champions League winning squad and commanded the Chelsea hierarchy submit a €85m (£72.5m) offer to try and secure his services.

Tuchel was convinced the acquisition of Marquinhos would have increased their chances of winning a Premier League title having previously managed the 27-year-old whilst at PSG.

But the Brazilian was never afforded the chance to respond to the offer with the Ligue 1 club instantly rejecting Chelsea's proposal.

Despite recording the second-best defensive record in the division, Tuchel is in need of reinforcements at the back.

Cesar Azpilicueta, Antonio Rudiger, Thiago Silva and Andreas Christensen are all out of contract at the end of the season and none of them are close to agreeing new terms to stay at Stamford Bridge.

A major reshuffle is expected in the January transfer window, especially after sliding down the table.

The Blues conceded just four goals in their opening 12 Premier League matches and topped the table in November due to their solid defensive displays.

Known for their solid backline under Tuchel, Chelsea have let standards slip in recent weeks and have shipped eight goals in their past six matches.

Tuchel's side are now six points behind league leaders Manchester City and face both Liverpool and City in their first two matches of 2022.
