Chelsea ‘put both goalkeepers up for sale’ as part of ruthless Pochettino revamp

Chelsea confirm Mauricio Pochettino as new boss

Chelsea are reportedly willing to offload both Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy this summer as new boss Mauricio Pochettino gears up for a major reshuffle between the sticks. The former Tottenham boss wants to bring a new No 1 to Stamford Bridge as a matter of priority, with the Blues hoping for a significant improvement in 2023/24.

Kepa was signed from Athletic Bilbao five years ago for £71.6million, making him the most expensive goalkeeper in history. The Blues’ hierarchy felt that the Spaniard would remain first choice for years to come after showing tremendous potential in La Liga.

However, he lasted only two seasons before Mendy was drafted in to provide fresh competition. The Senegal international made an instant impact and helped Chelsea to Champions League glory under former manager Thomas Tuchel, but Kepa regained number-one status in 2022/23.

Having limped to a dreary 12th-place Premier League finish, talkSPORT claim that Chelsea are now willing to entertain offers for both keepers as Pochettino seeks out a fresh start in goal.

Chelsea may have to grit their teeth and accept a hefty loss on both players – not least Kepa, who is currently valued by Transfermarkt at just £13m. The 28-year-old restored some credibility when called upon by Graham Potter and Frank Lampard last season, but it seems as though it may not have been enough to prolong his stay at Stamford Bridge.

Pochettino reportedly has his eyes on two goalkeepers. Andre Onana is one of those linked, and he may have played his final game for Inter Milan in Saturday’s Champions League final, which was won by Manchester City.

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez is also rumoured to be a player of interest, but the World Cup winner hinted he could stay in the West Midlands by rallying the Villa Park crowd on the final day of the season, screaming: “Let’s go to Europe!”

Pochettino has already set about ruthlessly trimming his Chelsea squad, which has been overflowing with players since co-owner Todd Boehly splashed out on a raft of new players during the January transfer window.

One of the new boss’ first courses of action was to send loanee Joao Felix back to Atletico Madrid, despite many supporters hoping for the Portuguese to be snapped up permanently.

Fellow loan star Denis Zakaria was also sent back to parent club Juventus, while a host of other peripheral stars are expected to depart west London in the coming months including Mason Mount, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Mateo Kovacic.
