Chelsea on verge of appointing ex-Man City chief as Granovskaia’s replacement

Chelsea look set to appoint Tom Glick following their dismissal of Marina Granovskaia.

Their latest recruit is Manchester City’s former chief commercial and operating officer, but now it looks as though he will be taking up a senior role at Stamford Bridge under the side’s new American owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital. Former owner Roman Abramovich has seen some of his closest confidants leave the side, with Granovskaia, Bruce Buck, and Petr Cech leaving the club in departing in recent weeks.

The Daily Mail report the departures of the trio have left a gaping hole in the back-room staff personnel but the appointment of Glick is the first step forward. The executive will take a lead role in the club’s backroom operations as the side gears up for next week’s pre-season tour of the USA.

Glick joined Man City in 2012 but before that, he was chief executive of Derby County for a four-year stint. As the shapeup continues, Boehly has appointed himself chairman and acting sporting director. It’s thought more names will come in to replace Granovskaia, Buck, and Cech.

Meanwhile, the Blues are reportedly keen on bringing in Leeds winger Raphinha and Raheem Sterling, both Premier League stars. The same publication reports that talks with Sterling have accelerated significantly and there is now confidence a deal can get done soon.

However, things are a little less straightforward with regards to Leeds winger Raphinha, who has told his agent – former Portugal ace Deco – that he wants him to end interest from Chelsea and make a move to Barcelona this summer.

Leeds are also set to lose midfielder Kalvin Phillips to Manchester City, in what looks like a mass exodus. And as such, former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor has voiced his concern for the side.

“Leeds are in big trouble,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider. “Leeds are my favourites to go down next season with Bournemouth and Fulham.

“You cannot afford to lose your two best players. Leeds play better with Phillips in the side and they struggled last season when he was not available. Now they are letting him go for a really cheap price. They should be getting at least £70million for him, he’s that good. I rate him highly.

“His passing, the way he wins the ball back and at the Euros he was outstanding. So that’s a massive loss. Then you can’t lose Raphinha, everything goes through him. He’s the bright spark in that attack. He’s lively, can score goals, can dribble. For me, he’s one of the best wingers in the Premier League.”
