Jadon Sancho may be one of the most sought-after attacking talents in Europe, but he is not of interest to Chelsea. Blues boss Thomas Tuchel believes he already has a player capable of matching Sancho’s output in his squad.
Sancho bagged eight goals and 11 assists in the Bundesliga for Borussia Dortmund last season, reaffirming his attacking quality.
And the 21-year-old is expected to bring his creative talents to the Premier League in time for the new season, with Manchester United the frontrunners to seal his signature, with a fee of around £85million expected.
But Chelsea think they have a player with a very similar skillset already in their own ranks.
Callum Hudson-Odoi recorded some of the most impressive statistics in Europe last season, with only two players in Europe’s top fives leagues (Ousmane Dembele and Jack Grealish) carrying the ball into the opposition penalty area more frequently than the Chelsea wide man.
And Hudson-Odoi also produced more crosses than either Dembele or Grealish, indicating that the potential for a huge increase in his output of assists and goals is there.
Hudson-Odoi’s ability means that Sancho may not be a target, but Chelsea boss Tuchel says he is nevertheless open to bringing in more top-class players this summer.
“We don’t need another seven and another complete turnover because it’s also our job to keep on improving,” Tuchel said. “We have still a young squad and it’s not about stealing from them the chance to prove it again, that they are capable of growing and evolving.
“But we have some ideas, of course, to make the group stronger, and I think this can always be a positive thing to challenge all of us.
“Two or three [signings] could be very, very good. It’s a constant thing to never deny change.”
And Sancho’s Dortmund teammate Erling Haaland could be a player on Chelsea radar.
The 20-year-old became the fastest player to score 20 Champions League goals earlier this year, reaching the milestone in just 14 matches in Europe’s premium club competition.
And Haaland has revealed that he will only move to a club who are capable of becoming European Champions.
“’I have been thinking about the Champions League my whole life, wanting to play there,” Haaland said.
“So maybe it gives me one per cent extra motivation when I go out on the pitch with the anthem.
“That’s my big dream: to win the Champions League one day. Hopefully I can lift that trophy and that really would be, well, amazing.”
