Chelsea make big decision on Jules Kounde with ramifications for Thomas Tuchel

Chelsea will push to sign Jules Kounde next summer whether they lose any of their defenders or not.

And there is growing confidence at Stamford Bridge that a £42m bid could be enough to bring the Sevilla star in.

Chelsea chose to keep their powder dry in the January window and did not go back in for Kounde after seeing an offer rejected last summer.

That decision was taken despite the uncertainty around the futures of Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta.

Chelsea look set to say goodbye to at least one of them next summer with all three out of contract and yet to agree new deals.

But they will relaunch attempts to nab Kounde whatever happens, as Thomas Tuchel has identified the France international as a key signing.

Sevilla refused to do business last summer, with Chelsea unwilling to go near his asking price of £60m.

But financial pressures mean the Spanish outfit could be forced to think again in a few months time.

The 23-year-old will by then be entering the final two years of his contract and Chelsea believe he is keen to join them.

Tuchel also wants to strengthen the Blues midfield with Jorginho and N'Golo Kante already in their thirties.

But he is also looking forward to working with England starlet Connor Gallagher, who will be welcomed back from his successful loan spell with Crystal Palace.

Chelsea will listen to offers for both Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ross Barkley next summer as Tuchel looks to retool his squad.

And while the Blues boss did not get the back-up left back he wanted before the winter window slammed shut, Ben Chilwell is expected back sooner rather than later.
