Romelu Lukaku was borderline ‘disrespectful’ to Chelsea by publicly admitting his frustration at the club last year, according to former Blues player Eidur Gudjohnsen. Lukaku’s Stamford Bridge return has been as smooth as he would’ve hoped this season, and his media antics have contributed to that.

In December, Lukaku opened up to Sky Italy about his discontent at Chelsea because of Thomas Tuchel’s tactics.

“Physically I’m fine, even better than before,” Lukaku told Sky Italy.

“After two years in Italy, in which I worked a lot at Inter with trainers and nutritionists, I am physically fine. But I’m not happy with the situation [at Chelsea]; this is normal.

“I think the coach has chosen to play with another system. I just have to not give up and continue to work and be a professional. I am not happy with the situation, but I am a worker, and I must not give up.”

And Gudjohnsen has labelled his decision to publicly discuss his unhappiness as ‘very strange’ and almost ‘disrespectful’.

He told Metro: “I found it very strange — initially I thought ‘this can’t be right’, but he [Lukaku] had actually given the interview and said these things.

“I thought it was on the verge of being disrespectful. You see it and think, ‘why would he want to jeopardise everything?’.

“People have only seen what he can do in glimpses this season, but on his day, he can be a man against boys with his physicality.

“I did think he would be perfect for Chelsea. Now it’s up to Tuchel to find how he fits into the team. He needs to feel important in the role he has.”

Lukaku scored four goals in his first four games after returning to Chelsea in a club-record £97.5million deal from Inter Milan.

Following a hugely successful stint in Italy, netting 64 goals in 95 games across two years, many expected the 28-year-old striker to continue his hot streak in front of goal.

But he has scored just five goals in the subsequent 26 games in all competitions since and hasn’t bagged in the Premier League since December.

Lukaku has predominantly been the focal point of Tuchel’s attack in his three-at-the-back system, but he isn’t entirely settled in west London.

The Belgium international will hope his winning goal in Wednesday’s FIFA Club World Cup semi-final win over Al-Hilal will kick start a positive run of form.
