Chelsea icon Gianluca Vialli was love machine who insisted ‘sex kept me scoring’

Chelsea icon Gianluca Vialli was a prolific striker who once said his goalscoring form was down to "making as much love as possible" and that scoring a goal was like sticking your fingers in a plug socket.

Following his sad passing at the age of 58 this week following a second battle with pancreatic cancer, details of Vialli's fine career and likeable personality have again delighted fans.

Having scored a total of 275 goals across a successful career in England and Italy, one particular quote about love making is sure to bring a smile to the face of his former team-mates.

Speaking to The Mirror back in 1997, Vialli said when asked about his fine form before their September clash against Arsenal: "It is because I am busy making love as much as possible.

"I feel extremely fit. In the summer I worked a lot. Swimming, bicycle work, running, and making love as as much as possible. The only trouble is that it's not too good for my back."

In his own presser, Chelsea player-manager Ruud Gullit replied while laughing: "Is that what he said? As long as he's happy."

Vialli also opened up about having to quit smoking while taking about his fitness, once having around five or six a day,

He said: "I wasn't a heavy smoker, only about five or six a day. But I decided to stop and it has helped."

Vialli had been in a relationship with long-term girlfriend Giovanna at the time, going on to split before he married Cathryn White-Cooper, with the pair then having two children.

Vialli was a Chelsea hero having smashed home 40 goals across just 88 appearances, managing 259 across 673 games across his club career and 16 for Italy.

Vialli also got a great reaction years later after appearing on Goals on Sunday opposite Ben Shephard and Chris Kamara for his assessment of how good it feels to score a goal.

He said: "I hate former players saying scoring a goal is like reaching an orgasm… because you know, it's an unbelievable feeling.

"When I scored four goals in less than 60 minutes I thought, is this possible? Four orgasms in 60 minutes!

"No. For me scoring a goal was like sticking my fingers in a socket, like an electric shock. You get a shock without the pain.

"You feel a tremendous amount of energy and you do some silly things (in celebrations) that you are ashamed of when you see them afterwards."
