Chelsea reportedly may be forced into putting seven players on the chopping block this summer as their financial accounts have prompted worries that they may not be able to abide by the Premier League’s rules. The league has strict guidelines over how much money clubs are allowed to lose over a set period of time, which could force Todd Boehly and co into making some big decisions at Stamford Bridge.

After Chelsea posted losses of £121million for the 2021/22 season, they highlighted the UK government sanctions that the club were placed under after former owner Roman Abramovich was sanctioned a year ago as part of the reason behind the eye-raising financial figure.

Chelsea said they continued to comply with UEFA and Premier League financial regulations despite the losses and the impact of the government sanctions. The club also said the effects of the sanctions on their financial results would continue to be felt “in the following years”.

However, The Times claim that the Blues are facing having to raise a substantial amount of money to avoid breaching the Premier League’s rules as clubs are allowed to lose a maximum of £105m over a rolling three-year period. Chelsea lost £153.4m in 2020/21, but made a profit of £32.5m the previous year.

The Mirror have stated that their financial worries place seven stars at risk of being sold in the summer as funds look to be raised by axing members of Graham Potter’s bloated squad. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is set to be among the first priorities as the former Arsenal and Barcelona forward has fallen down the pecking order and will likely leave Chelsea in the summer, having been axed from their Champions League squad.

Chelsea could use their famed Cobham academy to their advantage, as sold players who came through the youth system would represent huge profit on the club’s books. Mason Mount has been unable to agree on a new contract and with less than 18 months left on his current deal, could be sold in the summer with Liverpool and Newcastle among those said to be interested in his services.

Similarly, the report claims that Conor Gallagher and Ruben Loftus-Cheek could also make way. The academy duo could fetch a huge profit together and have previously been the subjects of interest from Premier League sides such as Newcastle, Everton and Crystal Palace.

Hakim Ziyech came agonisingly close to a Chelsea exit in January, as his loan move to Paris Saint-Germain collapsed at the final hurdle but as he remains on the fringes of Potter’s squad could be sold in order to raise funds.

Christian Pulisic is in a similar situation to the Moroccan, as he has failed to live up to expectations and struggled to nail down a spot in the starting lineup on a regular basis. With Boehly’s recent business acquiring Mykhaylo Mudryk, Raheem Sterling and Noni Madueke along with the possibility of Joao Felix signing permanently, Pulisic and Ziyech could depart the club.

Similarly to the glut of wide options, Boehly has signed three centre-backs in Wesley Fofana, Kalidou Koulibaly and Benoit Badiashile since arriving in west London. Trevoh Chalobah has in turn seen his chance of gametime reduced, while as another academy player he could fetch a large profit.
