Chelsea flop Werner scores goal of season contender as club urged to re-sign him

Chelsea fans have lamented their club's decision to sell Timo Werner after the striker scored an outstanding goal for RB Leipzig on Saturday.

The German international struggled to find his feet at Stamford Bridge after Chelsea beat Liverpool to his signature in a £53million deal in 2020. Werner was eventually sold back to Leipzig last summer after two difficult seasons with Chelsea, but he is beginning to rediscover his scoring form back in the Bundesliga.

Leipzig beat Augsburg 3-2 in Saturday's clash at the Red Bull Arena, with Werner bagging himself a brace, including the eventual winner. And it was his second strike which was a real stunner and will undoubtedly be in the running for goal of the season.

Receiving a lofted pass from team-mate Kevin Kampl on the edge of the Augsburg box, Werner took one touch to sidestep his marker before thumping a sumptuous volley into the top corner. It was his second goal in three minutes after putting Leipzig in front on 32 minutes with his first goal – and his brace took his tally to 100 career goals in the Bundesliga.

Kampl had equalised after 10 minutes to cancel out Arne Maier's early goal. Augsburg's Ruben Vargas then later set up a nervy finish with his goal eight minutes from time, but Leipzig were able to hold on for the win.

Chelsea fans were quick to comment on Werner's blistering effort, with one remarking on Twitter: "Allowing Timo Werner to leave Chelsea was a big mistake; while we are suffering, he is feasting! What a goal!"

Others felt similarly, as one supporter wrote: "Letting Werner leave and keeping these jokers was another bad decision. Look at this goal."

Another added: "Werner is unreal man, I didn't know why luck banging such goals could not come his way." One fan suggested former manager Thomas Tuchel was to blame for letting him go, while another supporter felt there was more to Werner than his poor form in front of goal for Chelsea.

"Been saying since he left it was a mistake," they wrote. "[I don't care] how many easy goals he shanked or how many offsides he was called for, his movement without the ball opened up so much space [for] guys like [Kai] Havertz to work in."

However, some fans disagreed with the suggestion Chelsea should have kept Werner. "He wouldn’t be this good in Chelsea, the conditions just weren’t right for him," one said, as another tweeted: "He would have been in an offside position if he was playing for Chelsea…"
