Chelsea could pull off another signing to Christopher Nkunku, it has been claimed. The Blues are reported to have agreed a deal to sign the French forward next summer and could strike early again with another target.

Chelsea spent around £270million on new signings in the summer. It was owner Todd Boehly’s first transfer window in charge since buying the club.

But despite the huge outlay, the American is not set to stop there. Nkunku is set to join from RB Leipzig for the cost of his release clause at around £52m.

Chelsea have moved quickly to beat other suitors to the 25-year-old. And transfer expert Fabrizio Romano says that could be the case with other deals.

Romano can see the west London club planning for the long term by getting another deal in place. He told Caught Offside: “Overall, Chelsea can be surprising as they have Todd Boehly making decisions on transfers, but now also a new board with Joe Shields, Laurence Stewart, Paul Winstanley and soon Christopher Vivell to plan for new signings.

“So everything is open, they will be very active on future plans. I would not be surprised if they try again something like they’ve done with the early move for Nkunku.”

One player Romano says Chelsea remain interested in is Ajax and Mexico defensive midfielder Edson Alvarez. There was a late bid for Alvarez in the summer and the player was keen on a move to Stamford Bridge.

However, Chelsea aren’t the only team keen on the 25-year-old. Romano added: “Edson Alvarez is also one of the players Chelsea appreciate, but talks are not ongoing now.

“It’s been quiet since August but I’m sure that in 2023 many clubs will keep an eye on him in the Premier League. Chelsea tried to sign him in the summer but Ajax were clear they did not want to sell, and it could remain a difficult deal.”

Alvarez, 25, moved to Europe with Ajax in 2019 after starting his career in Mexico with Club America. Former Ajax midfielder Andy van der Meyde recently claimed Alvarez should reject Chelsea as the lateness of their approach in the summer proved he wasn’t a top target for them.

Van der Meyde told Veronica Offside: “For a player, that is not that they really trust you, because then they would have knocked on your door earlier. Now they want to make a panic purchase and then he wants to leave Ajax immediately.

“Then he must also realize: they just want me, because they have nothing else.”
