Chelsea assistant manager Jesus Perez has been charged with misconduct by the Football Association following his red card against Brentford.

Mauricio Pochettino’s right-hand man was dismissed late on in the loss to their west London rivals following a confrontation with their coaching staff.

Perez now faces potential further punishment from the FA, who released a statement to confirm their action.

They wrote: ‘Chelsea’s assistant head coach, Jesus Perez has been charged with misconduct following their Premier League game against Brentford on Saturday, October 28.

‘It’s alleged that his conduct during the 88th minute which led to his dismissal was improper, and he has until Thursday, November 2 to provide a response.

Pochettino apologised on behalf of his long-serving assistant after the defeat, saying he was simply trying to get the ball back quickly from in front of the visitors’ dugout so the Blues could restart the match quickly.

The Chelsea boss said in his post match press conference: ‘We apologise to Brentford and apologise to the referee because he wanted to take the ball in front of Brentford. Nothing more than this.

‘It’s normal. They said, “What are you doing here?” and he said, “I want to take the ball”. That’s it. Nothing more.’

Asked if Perez – who usually joins Pochettino at press conferences to provide translation – had not been permitted to join him as a result of the red card, the Chelsea boss said: ‘I think the rule is to be banned. I think it is better to stay away.’

The red card for his assistant won’t come up at the top of Pochettino’s list of concerns following their 2-0 loss to Brentford.

Goals from Ethan Pinnock and Bryan Mbeumo sealed the three points for Thomas Frank’s side, who jumped ahead of their rivals into the top-half of the table.

Chelsea had picked up two wins and a draw from their prior three Premier League games, but now they face a tricky run of games with a home clash against Man City, sandwiched by away trips to Tottenham and Newcastle.
