Chelsea icon Alan Hudson has urged Thomas Tuchel to pursue a goalscoring midfielder in the summer transfer window, claiming that N’Golo Kante would thrive alongside a player with the attacking nous of Frank Lampard, the club’s all-time leading marksman. The Blues have enjoyed an upturn in fortunes since Tuchel’s arrival in January, and will aim to cap off their season with a European triumph by overcoming Manchester City in this month’s Champions League final.

The German boss has successfully addressed Chelsea’s defensive woes and seems to be getting the best out of the likes of Kai Havertz and Mason Mount in attack.

Kante is another Blues player impressing under Tuchel’s guidance, with the Frenchman playing an influential role in the 3-1 aggregate victory over Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-finals.

He is widely regarded as one of the Premier League’s finest defensive midfielders and looks set to be heavily involved for Chelsea once again next season, especially if Jorginho seals a summer return to Napoli, who have been linked with the 29-year-old’s services as of late.

Despite Tuchel’s bright start to life at Stamford Bridge, he will undoubtedly be looking to make a number of top-class signings in order to bolster his dressing room ahead of the new campaign.

A new striker is believed to be high on the 47-year-old’s wish list, with Timo Werner failing to live up to expectations since joining Chelsea from RB Leipzig in pre-season.

Borussia Dortmund talisman Erling Haaland and Romelu Lukaku of Inter Milan are understood to be on the west London club’s radar.

Hudson, who made 175 appearances for Chelsea over two separate spells with the Blues, has suggested that Tuchel could address the need for a first-choice forward by switching their focus to a move for Tottenham’s Harry Kane.

Meanwhile, the 69-year-old also claimed that his former employers should target a prolific midfielder, with Kante the ideal man to complement a player of Lampard’s ilk.

“The one thing for certain is Werner is not up to scratch,” Hudson told Caught Offside.

“I’ve said for some time that a Harry Kane is needed. He would have buried that first half chance against Arsenal, and would’ve made a difference had he played in a blue shirt at Wembley.

“I did a podcast about us winning the Cup Winners’ Cup this morning with Charlie Cooke, John Dempsey and John Boyle, and we spoke of the importance of a Peter Osgood who scores in big matches, much like Didier Drogba.

“This is lacking in this present Chelsea team. And Frank Lampard scoring 25 goals a season from midfield would be a dream alongside Kante today.

“If only. We’ve allowed standards to drop.”

It remains to be seen whether Tuchel will be inclined to sign a new attacking midfielder this summer, with Chelsea’s creative ranks already stacked full of talent.

Mount, Havertz, Hakim Ziyech and Christian Pulisic are all more than capable of pulling the strings, but none of the quartet are fit to lace Lampard’s boots when it comes to scoring goals.

The latter, who is considered by many to be Chelsea’s greatest player, found the net on 177 occasions from 609 top-flight appearances.
