Chelsea reportedly have the option to recall Callum Hudson-Odoi from his loan spell with Bayer Leverkusen in January and the move could potentially save Todd Boehly millions in the transfer market with the Blues in desperate need of some attacking reinforcements. The mid-season break for the World Cup came just at the right time for the Blues, who have endured a nasty dip following an excellent start to Potter’s reign after the dismissal of Thomas Tuchel in September.

Chelsea have had problems scoring goals of late having failed to score in their past three matches Arsenal, Manchester City and Newcastle.

There’s a sense that some additional firepower could be required in January in order to sustain a genuine top-four challenge as the race for Champions League football intensifies.

One card Chelsea have up their sleeves is the possibility of recalling Hudson-Odoi from his loan stint in Germany.

According to Kicker, the Blues have a recall option that becomes active in January – meaning they can bring the 22-year-old back to west London should they please, mid-way through the season.

The England international has played regularly in Germany but he is still yet to find the net in nine Bundesliga outings.

His only goal thus far came in the Champions League – even though Leverkusen were dumped up in the group stages.

Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso is confident the player will remain with the club until the end of the season, however.

The former Liverpool, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich midfielder said: “I would very much like to keep him. I am sure he will stay until the end of the season. He is an important player for us.”

Hudson-Odoi is seemingly enjoying his time at the BayArena too, adding: “I play a lot here and I really enjoy it. It was the right time for my career to come here.”

While Hudson-Odoi may not be the answer to Chelsea’s problems he would certainly provide them with something different in attack.

When the winger was at the top of his game earlier in his senior Chelsea career, he was tipped for stardom after also scoring on his England debut.

But for one reason or another, things didn’t work out for the jet-heeled forward under Tuchel but now he could get the chance to turn over a new leaf under Potter – despite his loan spell in Germany.

Hudson-Odoi remains a player with huge potential but he needs to be coached and nurtured in the right way.

Potter may lack experience at the top level but during his time at Brighton, he elevated his players to new heights and improved every individual within his squad.

It shows he has a proven track record of working with players on the training field and helping them fulfil their potential.

For that reason, a January recall could be a fantastic move from Chelsea, who are highly likely to spend in the winter market. Spending isn’t always the answer though, as proven earlier in the summer.
