Chelsea board ‘nervous and edgy’ over backing Lampard in transfer window says ex-striker
Chelsea: Lampard comes out fighting as pressure grows
Chelsea boss Frank Lampard is unlikely to be backed again in the transfer market this month, reckons former Blues striker Tony Cascarino. Chelsea have lost five of their last eight Premier League matches following the 2-0 defeat at Leicester on Tuesday. The Blues are eighth in the table, five points off the top four having played a game more.
Chelsea spent around £220million on new signings last summer but Lampard hasn’t been able to progress on his promising first season at the club.
Lampard’s side get a break from league action this Sunday when they face Luton Town in the FA Cup fourth round at Stamford Bridge.
That is followed by home matches against Wolves and Burnley in the Premier League.
And Cascarino reckons there must be an improvement in the next three matches or Lampard could be axed by owner Roman Abramovich after the Burnley clash on January 31.

“It never goes down well when you spend loads of money on signings who don’t work out or are not playing well,” Cascarino told talkSPORT.
“Upstairs will go, ‘we’ll give him more money and spend again’, but they get a little bit nervous and edgy about doing that.
“He knows the job at Chelsea is full of criticism and it doesn’t take a lot for that owner to make a change.
“Their performances have been really poor; take the win against Fulham, it was 1-0 and they struggled for long periods of the game.

“Their highest team they’ve beaten this season is seventh – they’ve not beaten anybody above seventh.
“He’s got three home games now back-to-back, one in the FA Cup against Luton and two league games.
“He has to win them. He might make the end of the season, but if he’s going to make the end of the season he has to go on a run of winning games now.”
Cascarino says Lampard has already been given more time than a lot of current Premier League managers, something Abramovich doesn’t normally do.
He added: “Frank has been in the job quite a long time. He’s been given the one commodity that doesn’t happen at Chelsea – time.
“He’s been in the job longer than David Moyes, Jose Mourinho, Mikel Arteta.
“Unai Emery got 18 months [at Arsenal], that’s exactly what Frank’s had at Stamford Bridge.
“There are lots and lots of worrying concerns. When he talks about the energy, he is the one who selects the team.”
