Chelsea are willing to sanction a loan move for Romelu Lukaku though Inter Milan fear their chances of striking a deal are minimal due to the finances involved.

Lukaku wants to re-join Inter after a frustrating first campaign back at Stamford Bridge following his club record £97.5m return last summer.

Inter want to bring the Belgian back too, however they are concerned about their ability to come up with the money to make a deal with Chelsea work.

Lukaku is willing to take wage cut to help seal a move back to Serie A but Inter cannot afford to re-sign him permanently and offer Chelsea enough of a return on their outlay.

New owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital completed their £4.25bn Chelsea takeover last week.

Boehly has held a number of meetings with manager Thomas Tuchel, including to discuss the Blues’ approach in the transfer market, and Chelsea are willing to let Lukaku go temporarily.

Inter accept their hopes of him returning on a free loan are a non-starter but have also baulked at the idea of paying a significant loan fee of around £20m.

Lukaku’s clear preference is to go back to Italy.

Though, with a number of obstacles to that outcome in the way, he is currently facing the prospect of having to return and attempt to revive his Blues career next season.

He is thought to be willing to accept that fate if no club comes up with a package tempting enough for Chelsea to let him leave.

Lukaku made an impressive start to his second Chelsea spell, scoring four times in his first four appearances.

An ankle injury and bout of coronavirus then contributed to him making just two starts from mid-October to the end of 2021.

However the goals had already begin to dry up before injury struck and Lukaku was beginning to be overlooked even when fit and laid bare his frustrations with how things had panned out at Chelsea in an infamous, unsanctioned interview in Italy in December.

Lukaku spoke of his unhappiness at Chelsea under Tuchel and desire to return to Inter in a move which did not go down well.

Lukaku enjoyed a run of starts in the first part of 2022 though spent most of the remainder of the season as a substitute with Tuchel often preferring to start Kai Havertz in a false nine role.

A late burst of goals earned Lukaku an FA Cup final start though he was under par as Chelsea lost to Liverpool on penalties.

He ended the season with 15 goals and as Chelsea’s top scorer, though just eight came in the league.
