Celtic claimed that the appointment of their new manager is imminent – as they unveiled a £2.5million thank-you gift to season-ticket holders.

The preferred candidate for the past two months to succeed Neil Lennon, Eddie Howe’s move to Glasgow should be ratified any day.

With Bournemouth having been eliminated from the English Championship play-offs by Brentford, the 43-year-old has been cleared to talk with trusted coaches Stephen Purches and Simon Weatherstone about moving to Glasgow.

Celtic are closing in on appointing ex-Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe as their new boss

Howe remains hopeful of bringing current Cherries technical director Richard Hughes with him in a senior scouting role.

Celtic confirmed that the hunt for the new manager should shortly be over as they launched their season ticket push for season 2021-22.

Expressing regret over the fact that the pandemic prevented supporters seeing any live action, a statement read: ‘Celtic’s season-ticket holders during the past year have shown tremendous commitment to the club, standing by us during a pandemic which has changed all our lives, supporting the club at a time we needed you most.

‘This is something we will always remember and will always be hugely appreciative of.

Howe has been out of work since leaving Bournemouth but is expected to be unveiled ‘shortly’

Bournemouth coaches Stephen Purches (L) and Simon Weatherstone (R) may join Howe again

‘We are truly sorry you have not been able to join us at Celtic Park and sorry we have not been able to deliver the further success which your support has deserved.

‘We understand how difficult this year has been for you and understand the disappointment you have felt. It is something shared by us all at the club.

‘We had hoped to have announced the manager before providing this update, and we do intend to finalise the appointment of the next Celtic manager shortly.

‘However, we have been encouraged by the recent announcement of crowds at sporting events across Scotland this summer.’
