Celtic ‘bigger than Tottenham’ says Darren Bent as ex-Spurs star risks backlash

Five potential transfer destinations for Harry Kane

Darren Bent has risked the wrath of former club Tottenham by claiming Celtic are a bigger club than the Premier League outfit. Spurs are reportedly closing in on the appointment of Hoops head coach Ange Postecoglou, but Bent wonders if the move is a good fit.

Chairman Daniel Levy seems finally set to end an exhaustive and chaotic search for Spurs’ new manager. Reports claim that the North Londoners could make their move for Postecoglou after Celtic’s Scottish Cup Final clash with Inverness on Saturday.

However, former Spurs striker Bent is unsure whether the Greek-Australian tactician is the right man for the job. He also claimed that Celtic are a bigger club than his former employers, risking a backlash from Spurs supporters.

“Yeah of course it is a step up, but which is the bigger club? Celtic,” ex-England attacker Bent told talkSPORT.

“They’ve won the European Cup so I’d probably say Celtic are the bigger club, they have a bigger fan base. With the facilities they’ve got at Spurs the potential is bigger, but I think it’s a risk and for me personally there’s options I’d have ahead of Postecoglou.”

The Scottish Sun reported on Thursday that Spurs plan to make Postecoglou their next manager. Celtic are supposedly already lining up a replacement for the 57-year-old.

Postecoglou has responded by insisting that the speculation does not bother him. The former Australia international is preparing his side for Saturday’s showdown clash with Inverness.

“I get all the interest and why people love to speculate on these things,” he said. “But we’ve worked really really hard to get ourselves in this position and for me to let my mind wander about anything else other than getting our team prepared for a big day on Saturday, it’s just not who I am.”

Postecoglou’s potential arrival at Spurs would signal the end of another chaotic search for a new manager. Spurs were knocked back by both Julian Nagelsmann and Feyenoord head coach Arne Slot, and also supposedly considered former Spain head coach Luis Enrique.

Levy is also expected to appoint a new director of football following Fabio Paratici’s resignation. The Italian was forced to step down in April after being handed a 30-month ban from football over a false accounting scandal at his former club Juventus.

Meanwhile, Spurs also face a fight to keep star striker Harry Kane, whose contract is due to expire in a year’s time. Wide-ranging reports suggest that the England captain is willing to run down his contract with the North Londoners, although he would prefer to move to Manchester United.
