Gabriel Agbonlahor pulled no punches in his scathing verdict on Casemiro’s performance for Manchester United in their 3-1 defeat at home against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Casemiro, 31, was one of the main underperformers in Erik ten Hag’s side, and the Brazilian was taken off just after the hour mark with United already 2-0 down. Casemiro’s replacement Hannibal Mejbri, 20, repaid Ten Hag’s faith by scoring United’s consolation goal from distance.

The Brighton defeat made it three losses in the opening five Premier League games in what’s been a nightmare start for the Dutchman on and off the pitch. Ten Hag has lost Antony and Jadon Sancho in the past week, and has had to deal with injury problems to Luke Shaw, Raphael Varane and new signing Sofyan Amrabat.

Former England striker Agbonlahor once again laid into United on talkSPORT following another dismal performance and result, aiming most of his criticism at Casemiro.

Agbonlahor said: “It was a stroll in the park for Brighton. I am watching the game, at no time did Brighton ever feel like they couldn't pass it out from the back. No matter who was pressing, they found it so easy to get through and create chances. This was like a training ground game, especially in the second-half.

“Casemiro! Casemiro looked like he was 45 running around that midfield. He [Ten Hag] had to bring him off on the 65th minute for Hannibal, a young lad, because he was that bad.”

Fellow ex-England man Jamie O’Hara added on Casemiro: “He couldn’t get back, he couldn’t track back, he couldn’t get close to anyone in midfield, really bad.”

    £22 a month

Casemiro joined United last summer in a deal that could reach £70million and enjoyed a catalytic role in Ten Hag’s midfield, coming up with vital goals, including the winner in the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle United in February.

The Brazilian nodded in United’s equaliser in their 3-2 win against Nottingham Forest last month but his shortcomings in midfield have been picked up by pundits. Ten Hag will be hoping that transfer deadline day signing Sofyan Amrabat will be available soon and possibly release the defensive burden on the five-time Champions League winning midfielder.
