Carragher slams "embarrassing" Liverpool as they announce Super League plans

Jamie Carragher has slammed former club Liverpool as an "embarrassment" after they announced plans to join a Super League.

The breakaway elitist competition, which also features five other Premier League clubs, released a statement last night after widespread condemnation.

The Premier League, the FA and UEFA were just three of football's leading authorities to come and out and criticise the proposals.

After Liverpool released a statement on their website Carragher responded on Twitter.

He said: "What an embarrassment we’ve become @LFC think of all the people who have come before us at this club who would be equally embarrassed as well. #SuperLeague ".

Carragher has since said in the Telegraph: "The more I read about the European super league proposals, the more it seems Liverpool’s owners must like empty stadiums because all they have done is raise the likelihood of another mass walkout.

"That is the beauty of league football – where every action and point matters.

"That is why, as a former Liverpool player, it sickens me that my club’s reputation is being damaged by the arrogance of an ownership group that wants to remove such peril, creating a culture where we no longer need to fight to earn our success.

"That is the antithesis of everything I understand football – especially in my city – to stand for.

"To be tainted by association with the European super league is bad enough, but Liverpool’s apparent leading role in threatening football’s competitive ideals.

"The very ideals which allowed the club to emerge from England’s second division to become six-time European champions – is a betrayal of a heritage they are seeking to cash in on.

The pundit was not the only man to make his opinion known with Gary Neville giving an emotional response to the plans on Sunday afternoon.

"The reaction to it is that it has been damned and rightly so," said Neville. "I'm a Manchester United fan and have been for 40 years of my life but I'm disgusted, absolutely disgusted.

"I'm disgusted with Manchester United and Liverpool the most. Liverpool, they pretend – 'You'll Never Walk Alone, the people's club, the fans' club'.

"Manchester United, 100 years, borne out of workers from around here, and they're breaking away into a league without competition that they can't be relegated from?

"It's an absolute disgrace."

Rio Ferdinand too slammed his former club, United, whose owner Joel Glazer is set to be a leading light in the Super League's hierarchy.

He said on BT Sport : "I'm embarrassed. There's been so many things thrown at the owners in the past, but this situation now.

"To be part of that group, who are going to be a breakaway group and leave everybody for dead – that's an embarrassment.

"I can't believe it. I'm a Man Utd fan, I love the club, but I can't stand by and support something like that at all."
