Carragher says United would send 'shockwaves' if they beat Liverpool

Man United would send ‘shockwaves through the Premier League’ if they beat rivals Liverpool at Anfield, admits Jamie Carragher as he insists top-of-the-table showdown is a ‘bigger game’ for Jurgen Klopp’s champions who must put rivals back in their place

Manchester United can send shockwaves through the Premier League if they beat reigning champions Liverpool at Anfield this Sunday, says Jamie Carragher.

Jurgen Klopp’s men have slumped in recent weeks whereas surprise leaders United are three points clear and are heading to Merseyside full of confidence.

A win for the Red Devils would see them open up a six-point gap at the top of the table and Carragher believes the onus is now on the hosts to win and prove that they are the better team with a strong performance.

Liverpool have slumped in recent weeks and are facing an in-form United side at home

‘I actually think it’s a bigger game for Liverpool,’ Carragher told Sky Sports. ‘The onus is more on them.

‘If United got a result there, that’s when the belief would come that they could win the league. I still think people think United may fall away and Liverpool have still got that edge, but if they won at Anfield that would send shockwaves through the Premier League.

‘It’s a game where Liverpool need to show they are the champions, they are the better team, get the result and also a performance that puts Manchester United back where they are.’

Liverpool come into the game without a win in three, drawing against West Brom and Newcastle then losing to Southampton last time out. However, they have not lost at home for three-and-a-half years so despite the shaky recent form will be confident they can see off their traditional foes.

The Reds are also continuing to manage their injury issues at the back, with questions over whether Joel Matip will be able to start the game.

Klopp is coming under increasing pressure ahead of the biggest match of the season

However, Liverpool legend Carragher doesn’t expect Klopp to change the way his side approaches the game.

One of Carragher’s former team-mates Robbie Fowler agrees with the sentiment that the pressure is on Liverpool, but remains quietly confident that the champions will close the gap at the top of the table.

Fowler told Sky Sports: ‘It is massively important, certainly for Liverpool now because obviously they find themselves behind in the table, and they don’t want to get further behind.

‘I think they’ll go into this game quietly confident. They’re not playing unbelievable stuff at the minute, but they are there or thereabout and knowing that if they do get this right result then it puts them in such a good space and ready to go on from there.

‘It’s a huge game. It’s probably bigger for Liverpool because of the situation the clubs find themselves in. I’m a Liverpool man, so Liverpool are going to win the game.

‘When you win these games it can make your whole week.’
