Carragher: Salah should be one of English football's best-paid stars

Mo Salah ‘deserves’ to be one of the best-paid players in the Premier League, insists Jamie Carragher… who says there are ‘a lot of years’ left in him because he’s ‘as professional as Ronaldo’

  • Mohamed Salah is currently in deep contract negotiations with Liverpool
  • The Egyptian winger reportedly wants around £500,000 a week in his new deal
  • Jamie Carragher claims Salah deserves a mega-contract due to his importance
  • The Sky pundit insists Salah has the same professionalism as Cristiano Ronaldo
  • Salah is also an easy pick in an all-time Liverpool starting XI, says Carragher

Jamie Carragher hopes Mohamed Salah signs his new contract at Liverpool as he ‘deserves’ to be one of the highest paid players in the Premier League.

The Reds have been tying down their biggest stars – such as Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alisson Becker and Sadio Mane – to new contracts this summer and Salah is reportedly in talks over making him the highest paid player in Liverpool’s history.

Former Liverpool defender Carragher claims Salah is worthy of that honour as he would easily make an all-time Liverpool XI – but the Egyptian also merits being in the bracket of England’s top-paid footballers due to his performances.

Salah has three goals in four games this season and is in talks over a new contract at Anfield

Carragher told Sky Sports on Monday: ‘When you pick your all-time Liverpool XI there’s always positions that go straight in.

‘(Alan) Hansen, (John) Barnes, (Graeme) Souness, (Steven) Gerrard, (Ian) Rush, (Kenny) Dalglish – you fill the positions no matter what this team does. There’s nobody you ever think of on the right really.

‘Mo Salah will be in that position, he will be in the all-time Liverpool XI when he finishes his career, there’s no doubt for me about that.

‘Liverpool haven’t gone into the market like other teams this summer but they’ve given new contracts to all their players. The one yet to sign is Salah, he obviously wants a few quid, rightly so, he deserves it.

‘He deserves to be one of the highest paid players in the league because of what he’s done since he’s come to Liverpool. Never injured, and year after year he’s top scorer.’

Reports earlier this month claimed Salah is demanding £500,000 a week in his new contract, which would put him right up there with Cristiano Ronaldo as the highest-paid player in the Premier League.

The Manchester Untied winger signed a two-year deal at Old Trafford on deadline day to make a sensational return to the Premier League – and Ronaldo capped his return off by netting a brace in the Red Devils’ 4-1 win over Newcastle on Saturday.

Carragher believes that Salah, who has scored three goals in four matches for the Reds this season, shares the same professional standards as Ronaldo and believes the Egyptian winger is capable of performing at the highest level for ‘a lot of years’.

‘We talk about Ronaldo coming in at 36, that guy’s a machine in the way he looks after himself,’ Carragher added.

‘I think he (Salah) is as professional as Ronaldo. I think there’s a lot of years left in Salah. Fingers crossed it’s sorted.

‘He’s massively important. Sometimes I feel for him because he goes under the radar at Liverpool.

‘When people talk about winning the league people talk about (Virgil) van Dijk and Alisson coming in but Salah came six months before. It was almost the three of them. People always talk about the keeper and centre back but Salah’s part of that.’
