Jamie Carragher has hailed Manchester United’s ‘outstanding’ display against Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, insisting the Red Devils were ‘everything they weren’t against Liverpool’.

United entered their crunch clash with Spurs under huge pressure with the club facing vociferous calls for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to be sacked after their 5-0 humiliation to Liverpool at Old Trafford.

Goals from Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani and Marcus Rashford saved Solskhaer from the axe and provided United a much-needed confidence boost heading into two tough games against Atalanta and Man City.

And Liverpool legend Carragher has labelled United’s display ‘outstanding’ and proof that, despite concerns from fans and pundits, the Red Devils can press high up the pitch.

‘I thought Manchester United were outstanding,’ Carragher said on Sky Sports. ‘I know since the game there was a lot of talk about how poor Spurs were, [but] we can’t criticise Manchester United for conceding five goals at home, looking all over the place and then going to Tottenham away, or any away ground in the Premier League, and stopping the opposition from having a shot on target.

‘We can’t just keep looking at Tottenham. There was talk also that Manchester United can’t press high, they haven’t really got the players to do it. I don’t necessarily agree with that.

‘I think a team should be able to press high at certain times and drop off, and that’s what Manchester United did in this game really well.

The Red Devils bounced back from their 5-0 defeat by Liverpool to hammer Spurs 3-0

Carragher says that United were ‘everything they weren’t’ when they lost to Liverpool

‘But in the first half, before it went 1-0, Manchester United were aggressive, on the front foot and pressed high. Second half they dropped off, because the goal changed the game and they got the other two goals maybe on the counter attack from a deeper position, but in that first half Manchester United pressed high.

‘They were together and compact, everything they weren’t against Liverpool.’

United’s big win has lifted spirits around the camp ahead of tonight’s trip to Italy to face Atalanta in the Champions League. Solskjaer has told his stars not to allow Saturday’s performance to be a one-off.

‘One swallow doesn’t make a summer,’ he said on Monday. ‘It’s important we keep focusing on what we did well in that game and improve on what we didn’t do as well. It’s relentless with games every three days and it’s a chance tomorrow to prove that we can go again.’
