Carragher: 'Bitter pill to swallow' for Reds as Man City win the title

Jamie Carragher laments ‘bitter pill to swallow’ for Liverpool after Manchester City win the title in dramatic style – and Reds icon warns Champions League final is 50/50 game if Thiago and Fabinho are injured

Jamie Carragher has described Manchester City winning the Premier League title instead of Liverpool as a ‘bitter pill to swallow’ for the club.

Jurgen Klopp’s side beat Wolves 3-1 on the final day after two late goals, but City pipped them to the championship after coming back from 2-0 down to beat Aston Villa 3-2 at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

And Carragher told Sky Sports after the game that the Reds will now have to turn their attentions to the Champions League final next week – but it will be made much harder if midfielder Thiago – who limped off at Anfield – cannot make it.

Jamie Carragher has called Man City winning the title a ‘bitter pill to swallow’ for Liverpool

Liverpool defeated Wolves 3-1 but still finished a point behind City, who beat Aston Villa 3-2

He said: ‘There is no doubt, it’s a bitter pill to swallow. At no stage today were Liverpool top of the league. Even though Liverpool won 3-1, they didn’t get those goals until City were 3-2 up. It will be tough to take. We have to congratulate City for that, to come back from 2-0 down was so vital. Credit to them, they’re a great team.

‘As I said before the game, no one expected too much, but it’s the hope that kills you. I expect more trophies in the future because of the manager and the players that Liverpool have. Get tonight out of the way, rest and recover then you’re playing the biggest game you can play. That could really make this season one to remember.’

On the Champions League final, against Los Blancos on Saturday 28 at the Stade de France in Paris, Reds icon Carragher insisted it would be a much tougher task for the team with key players Thiago and Fabinho injured.

And ahead of the Reds facing Real Madrid in the Champions League final on Saturday, Reds icon Carragher claimed it would be ‘more of a 50/50 game’ if key man Thiago (right) is injured

He added: ‘It will make a huge difference, Liverpool don’t have anyone like him, that is a real worry, it really is. If Liverpool go to the Champions League final with their best team they win the game, but if he’s out and Fabinho is not there, it’s not the best team and it becomes more of a 50/50 game. It will be a blow if he is out.

‘I think this crowd will give them a great send-off, I wouldn’t be surprised if Jurgen Klopp gives out a few fist bumps. You can hear the crowd now, they’re getting ready for Paris… if Liverpool could win that trophy then it would be one of the greatest seasons in the club’s history, it really would.’

Liverpool finished one point behind City in the table, with a chaotic recent 1-1 draw against Tottenham earlier this month a particular moment where dropped points has now cost them dearly.
