Eva Carneiro has admitted her love for football is finally back following her acrimonious Chelsea departure six years ago, as she expressed her delight at England and Italy’s thrilling Euro 2020 semi-final victories.

Carneiro left Chelsea on bitter terms following her infamous public spat with then manager Jose Mourinho in 2015 during the 2-2 draw with Swansea in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge.

The former Blues doctor felt the wrath of Mourinho after she ran onto the field to treat the injured Eden Hazard – with the Portuguese boss furious at her actions, arguing she was leaving his team without another key player following Thibaut Courtois’ sending off earlier in the game.

But Jose Mourinho was furious with Carneiro and an infamous public fall-out followed

Carneiro was publicly criticsed by Mourinho and the acrimony that followed ended with a settlement in her favour in the middle of an employment tribunal, where she claimed constructive dismissal.

And now six years on from that infamous day in August 2015, Carneiro said she has started to enjoy football again after seeing both Italy and England move one step closer to Euro 2020 glory.

The Gibraltan-born Carneiro wrote on Twitter: ‘Well it’s only taken 6 years but I’m finally enjoying football again!!!! Thank you. ENGvDEN #SpainVsItaly.’

Carneiro’s fall-out with Mourinho rocked football, and she has previously admitted her struggles following her Chelsea departure.

Carneiro took her former employers to a tribunal, in which she was awarded a settlement after claiming constructive dismissal

Carneiro, who revealed back in 2017 that she ‘found it hard to watch football for a year’, also last year opened up on the distress she faced at Chelsea.

‘It’s impossible to go through something that I went through for the best part of a year of my life and not be changed by it,’ Carneiro told talkSPORT last year.

‘But it hasn’t put me off at all.

‘It’s fair to say I needed time off, I needed to enjoy my job again and be a doctor again without the complications of being in the limelight.

‘In football, whether it’s racism, child abuse, athlete safeguarding and respect for the medical treatment – a change of culture is needed to change the things which are ugly about it.’

England booked their place in the Euro 2020 final after edging past Denmark in extra-time

Meanwhile, football fans were treated to dramatic semi-final encounters on Tuesday and Wednesday at Wembley.

Italy played out an enthralling semi-final with Spain, with Roberto Mancini’s side edging past their opponents via a penalty shoot-out following a breathtaking 90 minutes and extra-time.

And England secured their spot in the final – their first at a major tournament since winning the World Cup in 1966 – in dramatic style.

After going behind against Denmark, England surged back and sealed the thrilling win in extra-time through Harry Kane after he had initially missed his penalty.

England and Italy will now battle it out in the Euro 2020 final on Sunday at 8pm, and the anticipation is immense already.
