Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti has suggested that his side’s summer transfer plans will not be affected if the Toffees fail to secure European qualification for next season. The Merseyside club have enjoyed a strong Premier League campaign to date and will believe that they have every chance of sneaking into a Europa League or Champions League spot with ten games remaining.

Everton surged to the top of the Premier League table during the early stages of the campaign before tailing off slightly, but Ancelotti has managed to keep his team firmly in the hunt for a top-five finish.

They have two games in hand on fourth-placed Chelsea and can leapfrog Thomas Tuchel’s side if they manage to come away with six points.

The Toffees will face Crystal Palace on Monday evening in a hugely important clash at Goodison Park that could define the rest of their season.

A number of high-profile names have been linked with summer moves to Everton in recent months, including Real Madrid winger Lucas Vasquez, Tottenham and England midfielder Harry Winks and Paulo Dybala of Juventus.

However, with the club’s European status yet to be confirmed, it remains to be seen whether Ancelotti’s side will have the pulling power to attract players of a certain calibre.

Despite this, the 61-year-old has stressed that Everton will go about their summer business in their own way regardless of whether or not they manage to qualify for a shot at continental glory.

“We have to work hard to sacrifice to do everything to be in Europe,” said Ancelotti.

“I think it could be a good step forward, it could be a stamp on our season which until now is good but it could be fantastic if we are able to reach the place to play in Europe next season.

“The squad we are working on in the transfer market, we are going to work to improve the squad. This is for sure.

“If we are to play in Europe we are going to improve the squad, if we are not in Europe then we are going to improve the squad the same. It doesn’t change our idea.”

Everton’s transfer policy has produced a mixed bag in recent years, with the likes of Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin excelling while others have failed to live up to expectations.

The Toffees have splashed out more than £700million in transfer fees since 2010 but their trophy haul over the last decade stands at a grand total of zero.

Ancelotti suggested in February that he would not be looking to continue the club’s big-spending habits of old, instead outlining his plans to act wisely in the transfer market and avoid parting ways with huge sums unnecessarily.

“It will be important, the next transfer window and it will be important the transfer window the year after,” he told reporters.

“We don’t have a lot of things immediately. Here, we have to improve the squad.

“We improved the squad in the last transfer window, we want to improve the squad in the next transfer window and in the year after.

“I think with the last transfer window, we didn’t spend a lot of money and with three or four signings, the squad improved a lot.

“To improve the squad we don’t need to invest a big amount of money, you just have to find the right players.”
