Bus demolished in crash carrying Bulgaria national team with one ace in hospital
One player had to be taken to hospital after the Bulgarian national team bus was wrecked in a horrifying crash on arrival in Georgia.
The incident happened as the Bulgaria squad arrived in Tbilisi for their Nations League fixture against Georgia. Shocking images from the scene showed one of the coaches involved in the smash completely written off with the windscreen totally caved in.
The collision happened as the team travelled on two coaches from Tbilisi airport to the hotel. One of the drivers is said to have lost control of his vehicle and slammed into the other. The Bulgarian FA confirmed that star Todor Nedelev, who plays for Botev Plovdiv, was taken to hospital following the incident.
A statement from the Bulgarian FA said: "The national team suffered a serious road accident after arriving in Tbilisi. On the way to the team’s hotel, the driver of the first of the two buses carrying our team lost control of the vehicle.
"After the collision, midfielder Todor Nedelev was transported to a local hospital, where he is currently undergoing extensive clinical examinations. All other members of the team and staff of the Bulgarian national team are doing well."
Nedelev, 29, has 44 caps for Bulgaria, scoring five times. His most recent appearance for the national team came on Thursday when he was brought on with 19 minutes to go in their 1-1 draw against Gibraltar.
Despite the extremely serious nature of the crash, the Nations League fixture between Georgia and Bulgaria is still due to go ahead at the Boris Paichadze Dinamo Arena on Sunday.
Bulgaria are currently third in their Nations League group after two draws and a defeat from their opening three games. Georgia are top with three wins from three, with North Macedonia in second. Gibraltar are bottom on one point.
