Vincent Kompany has taken advantage of Burnley’s blank weekend by setting up two friendlies so his new-look side can gel more quickly.
With the Clarets fixture at Luton postponed on Saturday because Kenilworth Road is having ground improvements, Burnley have set up games against Scottish clubs Dundee and St Johnstone behind closed doors at their training ground on Friday.
The SPL teams are available because they have already been knocked out of the Viaplay Cup, whose last-16 ties will be played north of the border next weekend.
Kompany is keen to work on several aspects of team play following Burnley’s 3-0 home defeat against Manchester City on Friday and Bruun Larsen, who has joined on loan from Hoffenheim, said: ‘We have to keep our heads up. You don’t get a lot from City so you have to be clinical.’
Kompany believes his side can only get stronger following the defeat.
Vincent Kompany has arranged two friendlies for Burnley to fill the coming blank weekend
‘I think we had five guys who started for the first time for the club, a player who started his first debut in his career and overall we had chances and we knew it was going to be tough,’ he said.
‘We have to take the positives from this game and you can’t feel good with a defeat, but I’ve seen enough to show we’ve made progress since the last time we played.
‘Like I said before, this is the worst we’ll be this season, this team’s only going to get stronger.’
Kompany felt his side created chances but were ‘not dangerous enough’ against City.
‘In the end there’s nothing more than committing to a game plan and in the game we conceded after three minutes, but you have to live with the consequences and stick with it,’ he said.
‘I feel we have that spell in the first half (where) we created dangerous possession, balls in dangerous areas.
‘Then in the second half a little bit of momentum and possession where we settled down the game.
‘But in those moments where there was a little bit of momentum you have to do something. We were dangerous, but not dangerous enough. Against the best team in the world it’s difficult.’
