  • United will now face Roma in the semi-finals following their victory over Ajax

Manchester United talisman Bruno Fernandes has expressed a preference for having Edinson Cavani leading the line in front of him by labelling his team-mate a ‘proper striker.’

Fernandes waxed lyrical about the Uruguayan after he scored against Granada to help the Red Devils surge into the Europa League semi-finals with a four-goal aggregate lead.

United eased into the final four of the competition following two routine 2-0 victories over the Spaniards in which Cavani found the back of the net, much to the delight of Fernandes.

Bruno Fernandes has since labelled his team-mate a ‘proper striker’ and praised his efforts

Speaking to reporters at the final whistle, the playmaker said: ‘Everyone knows Cavani, everything he does, he is a proper striker, we know the qualities of our players.

‘It was a good game, Europa League is always difficult, they can create danger but we controlled the game, had the ball a lot. I don’t think it was bad tempered, we keep moving, do the right things, 2-0 again is really good for us.

‘Now is the time to take the next step and win a semi final but we must focus on the next game which is the league.’

Cavani needed only a brief sight at goal to send the ball crashing into the back of Granada’s net

The Red Devils still risk the prospect of losing Cavani at the end of the season, with the veteran star still weighing up the next step in his career.

As recently revealed by Sportsmail, United have been holding talks with Cavani amid growing claims the Uruguay star wants to leave Old Trafford for Boca Juniors.

Reports in South America have claimed that Cavani has decided to join the Argentine club on a three-year contract and take a pay cut rather than extend his current deal at United.

The 34-year-old striker signed a short-term contract until the end of the season worth £9million when he arrived at Old Trafford as a free agent on deadline day in October.

United will now face Serie A giants Roma in the semi-finals of the Europa League, following the Italian’s 3-2 aggregate victory over Ajax.

Addressing United’s next European opponents, who stand between them and a potential Europa League final showdown with league rivals Arsenal, Fernandes added: ‘Every team will give us problems.

‘We know Italian teams are well organised defensively, they have players people here will know and if we do the right things we will have chances to win the game.’
